Meet our 2020 Valentine's Day volunteer couple!
It was evident from the teasing and laughter that Ken Bissey and Joyce King have spent many Valentine’s Days together. Thirty one to be exact. They both are valuable World Medical Relief volunteers - each working in different parts of the building.
It all started on one fine Saturday morning more than a decade ago, when Ken decided to volunteer for World Medical Relief with no knowledge of medical equipment. ‘I enjoy it because it is a hands-on kind of thing. I like putting together medical equipment and make it ready for shipping’, says Ken who rejoined World Medical Relief a couple of years ago.
When asked if they like spending time together at the World Medical Relief - “actually, it is the time away from each other and we love it, plus, it is a long walk through the corridor,” laughs Joyce.
While Ken helps sorting out medical equipment, Joyce has been volunteering at the medical supply laboratory at the agency three days a week since she joined fifteen years ago.
On serious note, Ken says, ‘it’s actually good to be away from each other from time to time. Everybody needs their own space.’ And that’s the advice the couple has for the young generation on Valentine’s Day. ‘Travel the world, enjoy dinner and time together, but don’t forget to give space to each other, have your own time too. It makes a relationship stronger.’
The couple has traveled to more than eleven countries together and is planning a vacation to Iceland soon. On their Valentine’s Day plans, the couple says they are having a dinner with friends. And, of course, they will be back at World Medical Relief the next day to spread some more love for those who need it the most.
