Senior Fair 2019
On the last National Senior Day, Wednesday, August 21, 2019, World Medical Relief hosted a Senior Fest. The event took place inside from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. at World Medical Relief headquarters on 21725 Melrose Ave. in Southfield and was free for seniors.
The event was a success, we were able to serve 150 seniors from the community and had the participation of more than 25 partners that provided with valuable information and offered the seniors opportunities to screen for health issues.
Community partners such as: Ascension Health/Providence Hospital who brought its Mobile Cardiovascular Screening and their behavioral health team. Beaumont Hospital who provided a team that did blood pressure checks and stroke screening. Nelson Edwards, OD, who provided glaucoma testing and vision acuity while Beltone Hearing provided mini hearing tests. Dr. Walter Kizy was available to answer any questions you might have about oral health issues.
We had three different workshops for the seniors: Michigan State University hosted the workshop Eat Smart, Live Strong and Gail Summerhill who is currently the Attorney General’s for the State of Michigan presented a workshop titled “Senior Awareness/Elder Abuse Task Force”. The Silver Sneaker program provided a balance builder workshop.
In an outside tent more opportunities to get some exercise were provided by the famous dance instructor “Fast Freddy”.
Other partner organizations and companies provided information about a multitude of services, including but not limited to; senior housing, transportation, senior employment, hospice, in-home care and supplemental insurance.
